Bosch Original Batteries
« on: December 31, 2013, 11:02:55 PM »
I was on the "Bosch Automotive Tradition" site and saw that they are reproducing the original 6 volt tar top batteries starting in March of 2014.  The original batteries for the 170/220 models were 84 amp-hours and the new Bosch part number is F026T02344.
The diesel models being 12 volt would require 2 of the batteries wired in series.

Thanks for the info.  I will be ordering one this year when I get my motor done.

Although I'm very happy with my Optima 6V, I may have to look into this in more detail later this year.

Very similar to the ones I have made in Australia - just a change of decal. This one is 12v but they can also make the 6v ones, and I dare say, probably somewhat cheaper than a genuine Bosch one. The part that concerns me is that they state they have up to 70% more cranking power, which means they are using thinner lead plates. I wonder if they are offering a refurbishment service for when it eventually dies. With the ones I have made, if it does die, they refurbish it for about $80.

The batteries, not Bosch, are also available in Germany.  Like yours, logo rubber badges are available elsewhere for period companies such as Bosch and Varta.

Unfortunately, none of these batteries are available in the United States.  This is surprising considering the number of  Porsche 356 restorations here in California that utilize the same battery as the 170 and 220 Mercedes models.
