Starter 170Da
« on: May 25, 2014, 12:18:24 PM »
I am having some issues with the starter on my diesel. I haven't really had time to take a look at it to see if I can recognize the issue. Does any one know about the starter foe the diesels, are the parts for repair available/  Stephen

The 170Da used a Bosch starter EJD 1.8/12 R 25 which in 1960 changed to # 0 001 354 002.  Also interchangeable is a 170Db starter EJD 1.8/12 R 29 which had a later number 0 001 354 002 and again updated to 0 001 354 095.  Here is a parts diagram and parts numbers for the EJD 1.8 12 R 29.

I should have clarified this, the starter switch, 1st position for glow plugs to get hot then 2nd position to start.

I had my Diesel starter repaired at a local shop that repairs Bosch starters for John Deere tractors in South Texas.
My 1951 220 has a 1952 180 Diesel engine.

I wasn't thinking when I said starter. I have attached a picture of what I was talking about, #95.

Stephen,

My switch has four positions, Stop, O, 1, and 2.
If you can clean the switch contacts, it would help in starting the engine.
What are the symptoms?

Sometimes nothing will happen, no glow and no turning over.

When switched to position one, does the red light by the ignition switch go dimmer?
Be sure the battery cables have good contact.
