Cab A Fitted Luggage
« on: January 30, 2011, 02:10:55 PM »
I'm getting ready to build some fitted luggage for my Cab A.  I think I can do a nice job on the 3 cases in about 3 part-time days. I have located real pigskin and my upholstery guy can cover the cases in about 10 hours. I'm excited about this but I need a favor from anyone who has an original set. Could you please post the original dimensions of the cases and let me know if they are the overall outside measurements or ?.

If you contact the Classic Center, they should be able to give you copies of the factory drawings. These have the dimensions on them.

Do you think that Mercedes Benz would have the drawings?  They were made by Karl Baisch for Mercedes Benz, and sets were available for all of the 1950's models.

Here is an interesting link to MBZ Cabrio showing the recreated luggage wood frame.  Bob Silver is the owner of MBZ Cabrio and a member of this group and you may want to contact him.  He may have a set of luggage that he could measure for you.

Below find a picture of the 220 Cab A Karl Baisch luggage set (should be the same for the 170S).  The placement of the luggage should give you some idea of the sizes.

Here is a set on eBay right now for big $$$$.  Good pictures of some of the luggage details.

I don't know why this is off topic, but we should talk directly.
This topic is of great interest to me. I have been collecting Baisch luggage for my cab A for several years and have a lot of them but not all covered in the same material.
There were two styles of "tweed' weave: brown and tan (with brown binding) and black and grey (with black binding), the insides were mostly done in a reddish brown tone plaid but I have one in red silk and seen off white silk as well.
The Pigskin is not real pig skin but a vinyl look alike product and is not available any more as far as I know. If you found some I would love to know the vendor and I could recover a few of my cases to make sets.
Prewar sets were usually covered in black leather with off white interior.

I believe that the vinyl pigskin material is the later one and primaily used on the 220 line and onward and the tweed type on the 170S.
Here are a few pictures to show the different types.
Pictures 2 and 3 show the black and grey tweed weave and a nice close up of the brown plaid cloth, pictures 1, 4, and 5 the brown and tan weave. 5 also has the red silk lining. 6 shows the pigskin material with brown plaid lining.

There is also a line drawing of the car that shows the dimensions of the luggage. I will dig that up later. Volker

In addition to the sizes, is there a source for hardware, corners, handles, latches, ect?
I'd like to buils a set for my 180a.

Thanks,
Ted

I believe ranchomerced.com makes reproductions. They might be willing to sell the components necessary for making reproductions. Stephen

Here we are 3 years after this was 1st posted. Did you ever make the luggage and if you did, where did you get the hardware?  I bought a set for my 300 and it is missing a few pieces which will need to be replaced. Stephen

Thanks John, unfortunately nothing is the correct size. I probably will have the corners made and modify the nail heads to the correct size. The biggest issue will be the upholestery nails/feet. The ones I find are either too big or too small.
