Mercedes M198 / M189 / M186 custom forged alloy Piston sets
« on: February 19, 2013, 05:57:55 AM »
For the past year, in conjunction with an engineering company, I have been re-designing the Mercedes M186 piston. We wanted to have a more modern piston design, lighter weight, and increased compression.  The photos below are the result. Some details of the piston are as follows, and we intend to market these pistons. Price is considerably less than the standard offering from Mercedes. I know there are a few here that have an interest in these other models, so thought it might be of interest.

These pistons are made in the USA to exacting tolerances, of forged low expansion 4032 alloy. These newly designed pistons feature a reduced weight of 526g, whereas the original Mercedes piston is approx. 700g. In addition, these pistons feature a modern skirt and 3 ring design, utilizing Mercedes 280SL piston rings. The design is registered to us, and is not available elsewhere.

The piston has also been designed for increased compression, which, depending on which engine they are utilized in, will provide an approx. increase of 15%.

All sizes are available from STD 85.0 to 86.5 mm.

Indicative pricing will be USD 1990/EUR 1490/set of 6 pistons, including piston rings and wrist pins, plus freight. Subject to final confirmation. We believe this is a very attractive price in comparison to the standard issue Mercedes M186/M189/M198.

Craig,  now that you are a proud owner of a 170S are you going to do the same with the M136 engine?  We could use some help with our 45>50 HP engines, and of course you have a larger base to sell to.  ;D

nice thought, but my motor has already been rebuilt ! However, if someone was willing to buy a set, I would certainly go through the exercise. I would need to find a motor locally to do the measurements, but that shouldn't be too hard to find.

I looked up the part number for the piston (181 030 00 17) on the Classic Center website, but it doesn't list it, and Niemoller have them for EUR 291.36.

Are they hard to find ?

They are available from MB dealers discounted to US$283.92 or approx EUR 213 and www.oldtimer-motorenteile.de has them for EUR 139.  So not too bad a price.  Obviously nothing compared to the 300, but then again not nearly as complex a piston design.

Not a bad price at all, but you then need to add the rings and presumably the pin with the German website, which increases the cost considerably. Still, would be good to have an increase in HP from the lowly 52 !

I'm just about to install a set of Arias pistons in an engine I'm building. I wanted the 73.5 for an earlier engine. The cost was comparable or a little less than the stock pistons and the are forged!, hardly necessary for the 170. I too wish that some mods could be made to boost power, but my machinist says there isn't much you can do.
