Title: Hub caps
Post by: twigren on January 05, 2019, 08:47:35 AM
Dear friends,

Renovating wheels now by powder coating rims and ordering new tires.
My hub caps however are in terrible shape.
Both with various cracks and rust all over.

As new (original 4x set from mb classic parts...) cost around 800 USD I consider other options.
1. Wrap the old ones with chrome vinyl...?
2. Paint with liquid chrome paint + clear coat.
3. Repair and chrome, the proper way (however in Sweden as expensive as buy new set...).
4. Find reproduction parts cheaper, but where...?

What is your recommendation?

Best Regards
Thomas

Probably better to buy something like this

hi craig!
yeah, i know - but to pay almost the same amount (as new, but at 3/5 quality....), cannot be a good solution.
do you know any other options?

The problem with aftermarket is the quality of the chrome and you certainly don't want to pay 50 - 60% of the genuine article only to have problems a couple of years later. You may just have to keep an eye out and buy them one by one.

I got 4 nos hubcaps on ebay that were part of a grouping.  I think they were about 100 each.  Hard to find.  Has anyone used one of these to paint their hubcaps?

I've seen the stencils, but never used one.

Yes, they are not too bad, but you wouldn't use one on a concours vehicle.

Note that the ebay offering caps do not match.  I think the unpainted pair have a middle ring that is circular in profile,  the painted ones have a profile that is asymmetrical. Also keep in mind if purchasing used that the 170 V caps are smaller than the 170 S/220 caps.
