Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A 


This unit was for the last decades in the hands of a determined collector and she was restored recently by a well-recommended specialist in Mercedes-Kompressor-matters. Naturally her identity as a genuine Kabriolet A was kept and other than the steadily increasing number of "special-roadster" this model is still the most sought-after of the 8-Cylinder supercharger series.

The first series 540k Cab A is my favorite of all the 500k/540k models.  Off the top of my head I want to say they built around 36 total all of them in 1936.  The radiator on this model was pushed back 5 inches.    In 1937 they went to the second series cars with the dual sidemounts and the radiator in the standard spot.   I think there were around 80 of the second series cars made.

Jan Melin lists a dozen of them or so in his second book.  Off the top of my head I can think of at least that many so I think 1/2 is not a bad guess.    They were only made for short time in 1936 after 500k production stopped and before the second series was introduced in 1937.

I want to amend this to say that there was a total of 80 of both series.  Around 36 of the first series like this and another 50 or so of the second.
