Interesting to know: In 1933 Mercedes introduced the Mercedes 380 cabriolet, in 1934 the 500 K and in 1936 the 540 K. The cars were produced in many different chassis and body versions (roadster + different cabriolets). So it is not so easy to say, how should an original car look and how different is the replica. Some buyers bought only the chassis without the body and the body was made by separate coachbuilder.
Today the original Mercedes-Benz 500K/540K roadster may cost as much as 1.000.000 EUR.

German company GFG produced the 540 K Spezial-Roadster replica from the mid-eighties until 1991 and called it Elisar. The mechanical parts were used from new Mercedes-Benz cars. So in terms of performance and handling, the replica is even better than the original. The original car had the so-called suicide-doors. Why the Elisar's doors open normally, is probably because the German authorities didn't allow to build cars with the front-opening doors.

This GFG Elisar is in a new car condition.

So far all of the replicas I have seen, like the Marlene, Heritage... look like bad carricatures to me. All of the proportions are wrong and for that money I would rather have a real 170!
There is a guy here in Massachusetts that has been trying for years to build a true replica using the original dimensions. Can't wait to see that one completed.

I agree Volker.  The first problem is the wheels are always modern and wide and it throws everything off from the start.   The reproduction special roadster bodies I have seen on original chassis are perfect but they also sell for 700-900k.

Btw,  I assume the one you are talking about in Mass was at Lars Anderson 4 or 5 years ago?  I believe I saw it there.  He is using a late model MB engine.
