Remote oil filter for W-187 Type 220
« on: November 30, 2010, 02:27:42 PM »
I have a 1952 W-187 Type 220 Sedan with a later engine block (180.924 Motor # 8510279). The engine is fitted with the later style oil filter houseing (vertical) and as there are clearance issues, the prior owner had the filter housing cut and welded to accept a shorter filter!!??!!

The housing contained no filter when I came upon the car. Is there a remote oil filter that I can utilise on this engine? Or is this an acceptable modification for which there is a standard filter cartridge?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Your engine came from a Ponton 220S.  The original filter cartridge was available in both a washable type and a replaceable type.  Most likely the original filter cartridge was made Mann+Hummel.

The original replaceable filter was MB part #000 184 22 25 or a Mann H601 and comes with the "O" rings and sealing rings.
Size was 58mm OD x 18.5mm ID x 100mm long.

Mann has an extensive listing that you can search by dimensional information.

I am not too familiar with the 220S engine but I believe some parts, such as the water pump, can be "bolt on" replacements for the older 220 engine.  With that in mind, and since the vertical oil filter assy has a clearance issue, I wonder if the horizontal filter would bolt onto the block with the same oil passages and bolt holes?  I would have no way of knowing but perhaps someone on this forum that has knowledge of both may know if that is possible.

No, the correct filter will not bolt on. If this were the earlier ponton block with two side covers it would bolt on, but when they changed to the single side cover block, they changed the "footprint" for the casting to a different shape. Just to clarify what John said, the earlier ponton filter had both a replaceable paper element and a wire screen, and the later ponton filter had on a larger paper element and no screen. Strictly speaking, there were three versions, the first two with the wire screen had the two different castings with different footprints.  The original 220 W 187 filter had only a screen.

It looks like a remote filter is the only option, but you have to deal with the valves. I see what look to be two on this unit, although I thought the maximum over pressure relief valve was in the block. It is on the 220, but maybe not on the 220 S. I don't have my books in front of me. The other valve would be the bypass valve if the filter gets clogged. Some spin on filters have this built in so you need to know what filter to spec.

Check the Speedway catalog for remote filter units.

Found the oil filter housing solution for fitting the 220S Ponton motor into the W 187 chassis....

The 280SL has an oil filter housing that sits at the 8 o'clock position and bolts up to the 220S block. I am almost certain that it will even clear the water jacket drain on the block, avoiding removal of the tap and use of a plug.

Cost me $125 at the auto recyclers.

I LOVE simple solutions
