Help identifying a 500K
« on: May 24, 2011, 01:40:04 PM »
Hello,

Chris here from Germany, new guy checking in. I am currently building a Pocher Mercedes 500K model car kit, which I was able to obtain through that well known online auction house. The abandoned kit is in rough shape and it needs a complete rebuild, but I have the engine about done now, and hope to start the chassis very soon. There should be a Mercedes Modeller's Forum here for all us guys desperately trying to get all those bad fitting and badly moulded plastic lumps together that should eventually look like a Spezial Roadster. Just kidding. On my internet research on the 500K I stumbled across this image, which I believe is the prototype the Pocher engineers used as a basis for this kit. It has the long doors for a 4-seater, and also it has brown(ish) wheel rims and the Pocher rims are moulded in brown plastic. Pocher claims on their instruction booklet that they used a 400K example that is in the Turin Museum as a prototype, but by checking their webseite, it seems to me they only have the classic Cabriolet A there with the squarish doors and side windows, not a Spezial Roadster. As the rumours go, the prototype is now privately owned and has been locked away and hasn't been seen by anyone for the last few decades. So my questions are
- Can someone here identify the 500K Roadster on this picture?
- does anyone here know for sure which 500K was used by Pocher as a prototype?
Answers are grately appreciated.

This is not actually a "Roadster" but a Cabriolet A with a number of unique features.  I do not know if it was the basis for the Pocher model but it was sold at auction in 2007 and you can find a good write up of it here:

Thanks for that link alsancle, extremely interesting! After looking at all those images, I am now even more convinced that this car was the basis for the Pocher model. Does anyone know who bought it, and where the car is now?
