1953 Body Parts Interchange with earlier models
« on: September 04, 2012, 06:59:26 PM »
I have a 1953 170S, with the restoration goal of making it more like a WW2 model, so it can be used for WW2 Living History.
Will the truck lid with the iconic spare tire holder fit on my car without much modification? What years had the hood with the spare tire deal?
I would also like to exchange the 1953 bumpers for the earlier style, sort of bowed in the middle with chrome ends - can I do this?
How about the hood? Mine lifts up toward the windshield and is one piece, with separate side pieces. Can the earlier style hood be mounted, with the sides lifting up, toward the middle?

Now, for an immediate concern, I found some new headlight reflectors, from a 1951 170Da, are they the same as my car? Mine are rusted and have lost their mirrored finish on the bottom half.
The same guy has a rear window assembly, from the same car (1951 170Da),....will that fit my car?

AND, for you 'purists', reading this, don't have a 'kaniption fit' - I will keep all of the original 1953 parts to be able to put it back to original, if need be, someday.

Thanks in advance,

Gib

The trunk lid with the tire mounted in the trunk lid was on the prewar models and post war 170V, 170Va, 170Vb, 170D, 170Da, and 170Db models for all of the production years.  Unfortunately, the lid from the from these models will not fit the 170S or 220 models.  The tire mounted trunk lid is hinged from the bottom, whereas the 170S and 220 models are hinged from the top and substantially larger in size.  There was available a hinged tire rack that some owners used (see picture below).

Different hood dimensions between the 170Va and 170S

Headlight reflectors should be the same as long as the manufacturer of the headlight assembly is the same.  Cars were available with Bosch headlights or Hella headlights.  You can also have the reflector re-silvered.

Bumpers would require custom making some brackets to fit the 170S.

Different window sizes between the 170Va and 170S.

The 170S, 170Sb 170S-V, 170DS, and 170S-D were a new body design that was a refinement of the basic 170V and its variations.  Other than the drive line, you are going to have difficulties interchanging parts.

the 170s model is almost the same as the 6 cylinder prewar 230  (w153)
diferent parts
the prewar has other :
interieur
dashinstruments ,4 spokes steering wheel , you can open the front window.

exterieur
louvres in the side pannels of the motorhood
extra rear window (Little one)
and indeed the bumpers

iff you want to do something with the spare tire ,mount them in the frontfender like this 290

The 1953 170S  (Sb, DS) has the same body as 220W187. The W187 has a longer hood and other front fenders.

There are many parts that are different to the 170S. Much more parts that you can see at a first look.
Rear window
Rear axle
Dashboard and electrical switches / lamps
Steering wheel
Gearbox
Gear leaver
Seats
Rear trunklid
Trunk lid hinges
Doorhandles
Door lock
heating system
Ventilation system
The Frame has a bigger dimension
Roof inside polstery
Rear mirror
Sunvisor
Electric start button
Lubrication pump and reservoir

And a lot of other small parts...........

You should look for a 170 V, Va, or Vb made through 1953 if you want a pre-war look, as they are essentially the same body as the pre-war version.
