Reverse Shift (click) in steering column
« on: November 05, 2013, 01:21:39 PM »
I hope someone can help me, I have a W187 220 (1952) and can't seem to find out why the feel (click) of the reverse shift is not noticeable.

I am having a hard time diffrentiating from the 1st gear and reverse and sometimes pick reverse intead of first. I know there is some sort of a click feeling built into these cars.

Anyone have any ideas where I should start? I am thinking of rebuilding the column, but only to solve this issue, so I want to make sure I am not embarking on more than what's needed.

Thanks in advance for all the advice!

Pran

I have never noticed it in mine.
If there ever was such a thing, mine doesn't do it either.

You should have this spring forced pin, or a reverse light switch which will give you the
necessary "click"
Sometimes the grove in the gear shift rod  has vanished because of fatigue or the pin is damaged too.

The "click" on reverse lays on the top of the transmission, fig 1 on picture, but you do not need to take out the transmission to repair, only the top.
