Matching numbers for the car engine?
« on: March 03, 2016, 05:34:01 AM »
What are the matching numbers for the car if the motor is replaced in Mercedes service cca.1960?
It is stil w187 engine just from the another year or the same year just not the number which was firstly installed. It is still M180.920 engine. Is that matching number or it has to be the same engine firstly installed? Does that diminish the value of the car?

When I lived in Germany in 1973 I had a 1963 VW. The VW garage replaced the engine and they stamped the original number in the aluminum block so it matched.

I think those days it was usual to get to a service and if you had a bigger problem one of the options was to leave your motor and get a replacement one.
I do not know if that replacement was from the factory stock (one option) or it was another previously left engine from some other car that would get a plate "replacement engine" (that is a second option, but in that case it would have a numbers from the car in which was firstly installed on the engine block I assume).
Does all the original engines have the numbers hammered in the block.
I have one block which have engine numbers hammered in the block.
