that's certainly an interesting modification....whether custom-made at the Werks or other.
the 170S, DS, etc does not have a lot of room in the back seat...so obviously the dignitaries went with the 300 series as of 1951.   This modification allows for more back seat room, and therefore was probably custom-made for someone of great wealth or power.  You would think if this car was made by the Werks, it would be in the MB museum?

yes,  some facts showing the way, that it is a coachwork from mercedes and maybe itŽs done in the Werk as a prototype. In the background you can see a W100 (600) and the black one seems to have the same back-end, but no hatchback. And -of course- three exotic mercedes at one place, 2 of them individual creations, are a sign, that mercedes is the owner and the photo has been shooten during an event in the sun, maybe in spain or so (you see the jeep or seat marbella behind the black mercedes ... it looks from the 80th) ...

It must be a very early 170, because the "winker" are missing between the doors and I remember some pics about prototypes for the "next generation", the 300 adenauer and the 220 (W187) in the early 50th with a separate fixed-window and a longer chassis.

To have the vision to a hatchback in the 50th shows us, how creative heads where working there.

Maybe I will find an information by the officials from the musuem ... I will reply, if I find further informations.

greets

hans

I got further informations about the mystic hatchback ... (thanks to J.I.Mattson from Sweden, member of www.170v.de), and here ist the link to the cars history

http://www.mbspares.com.au/Information/Newsletters/NewsletterNo069170MysteryMBCVConcoursinfoElectricalinformati.aspx

Its done from a spanish coachworker, not from the werk ....

Hello, this car has been of particular interest to me for a while. I wrote to the australian site and did further research to find out that the car was a one of taxi body made in Teneriffe, Canary Islands. The coach builder was from down there and has since passed away.  It was a special order for a local customer in the 50s.
