This Mercedes Benz 170 Da has a very early and very rare 170 D “split valve cover” diesel engine – engine serial number 0291. According to a Mercedes-Benz historian, only 912 of these 170D split valve cover engines were ever produced. The engine is tight and cannot be turned by hand. Removing the valve covers reveals a very clean valve train. The early diesel engine designed by Heinz Hoffman shared the same cylinder dimensions and many other major components as the 170V petrol / gas engine (38bhp @ 3,200 rpm). The 170D was the first diesel economy model Mercedes-Benz in the post-war era (40mpg). This 170Da classic will require a full restoration.

Four speed floor mounted gear shift. 16” wheels on the front, 15” wheels on the rear. Suicide doors. Dual glove box dash. Early top mounted windshield wipers and louvered piano hinged hood. Original large letter SEKURIT door glass and early vent glass. Rear glass is missing and the driver’s door glass is cracked. External lower hinge trunk boot lid with 2 lockable chrome L handles. No keys. Right side grooved semaphore in place, left side is missing. Car was hit in center front many year’s ago - see photos. Driver’s door is off car but complete. As well as the front fenders, hood, radiator and rear bumper assembly are not attached to vehicle – but can be placed inside of vehicle for shipping purposes. Windshield glass is broken. Missing parts include: right headlamp assembly, right running board, clock, rear window assembly. Rust in floors, door bottoms, rockers, trunk and rear body panel will need to be attended to during the restoration process. Seats are original. Headliner, door panels and some interior wood will require replacement.

This 170Da is a great classic project car – being in long term storage for many, many years. Non-running rolling chassis vehicle. Please email with any questions before bidding. This 170Da has not run for many years and will require complete refurbishing. A car trailer or hauler will be required to relocate the vehicle. This is a non-operative rolling chassis vehicle.

I have to check with PA DOT concerning a reconstructed title and make a determination about the damage to the front end but perhaps this would make a good restoration project.  I have always been a fan of the early AC Cobras with the transverse leaf spring suspension and 289.  How sought after are the split valve cover engines?

Thanks for any advice to a newbie here.

I did check with a good auto title agency concerning a vehicle with only bill of sale.  They said Alabama will issue a title for about #300 and than come back to Pennsylvania to gain PA title.  I also asked about converting to a cabriolet and she made the documentation sound easy.  There are some inspection garages here in my state who can certify that the conversion has been done properly and the car will be sound to drive and on you go.  The only trouble is of course it will never be a factory originate cab.  :(

I am still considering the purchase of this project.  The listing indicates the broken or missing parts are the title, driver’s door glass, windshield glass, right headlamp assembly, right running board, clock, rear window assembly.  I would also need the driver's side fender bracket and the grill.  I am trying to contemplate the process of completing the project prior to purchase.  Is the early 170D engine THAT interesting?  Input?

Thanks
