170S cabriolet production description

The introduction of the 170S model sedan in May of 1949 was accompanied by two cabriolet versions; the 170S cab A and 170S cab B.  Both of these cars were an attempt by Mercedes Benz to broaden their post war offerings to an upscale leisure and luxury world market.

The 170S and cabriolet versions shared the same chassis and mechanical systems.  The major departures from the 170V version were the independent front suspension and the downdraft carburetor.

The 170S cab A is a 2 door 2+2 seat arrangement with styling clues from both the new 170S sedan and the sweeping front fenders of the 170V.  Unlike the 170S sedan which introduced the metal structural framework for the body, the cab A has a structural framework of wood (last of the coach built cars).  Other distinguishing features of the 170S cab A from that of the 170S cab B are chrome headlight housings, chrome windshield frame, and chrome along the facing edge of the running board.  Unlike both the 170S sedan and cab B versions, there is no chrome on the horizontal hood vents of the cab A.

The 170S cab B is two door with a full back seat.  The cab B has the same outward appearance of the 170S sedan, but of course with a convertible top.

The cabriolet versions were produced until February of 1952 when they were replaced by the 220 cabriolet versions.  During the 3 year production span, Mercedes Benz made 830 cabriolet A models and 1603 cabriolet B models.
